From Windows-Wimp to Command-Line Warrior. Part 1: Introduction.

GNU/Linux and BSD (including Mac OS X) users have access to a command-line environment either by default or by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. Windows users though only have access to DOS.

DOS is not up to much when compared to more modern command line systems. Microsoft has recognised as much and is designing its own version of Bash called Msh.

This will not be available for many years however and will also suffer the disadvantage of running on top of the graphical user interface (GUI or Goo) based operating system.

It also remains to see whether many of the several hundred (if not thousands) of command line applications on GNU and Unix-like systems will be made available to MSH users.

Bash and other GNU and BSD shells on the other hand are part of the operating system and directly access it, the Goo is not required allowing the full resources of the computer to be available to the Command Line Warrior.

In this new series, we will look at how to add a BASH environment to an existing Windows computer. If you want to learn more about computing and want to have lots of fun in the process then join us and become a Command Line Warrior!
