From Windows-Wimp to Command-Line Warrior. Part 2: Getting your stuff together.

22 August 2005

To undertake this series, you will need:

Necessary 1. A computer 2. A blank CD-R 3. An Internet connection

Optional extra 4. A printer or second PC

  1. The Computer

You need a computer of course. This series assumes that you happen to have a AMD or Pentium-style computer with Windows pre-installed.

That is not necessary however, and I aim later to create some additional notes for different situations. If you want to undertake this guide using a different setup, then do let me know about it and I will attempt to make sure I get around to writing some notes for your setup.

If you are lucky enough to have two computers, for example your current workstation and an older computer, then you could practice on the oldest one first as a Command-Line system is not as resource intensive as a RAM-hungry Goo.

  1. A blank CD-R

The CD-R can be replaced in theory at least with a USB stick if your computer has a modern BIOS which will boot from USB.

  1. An Internet Connection

During the series you will need to download and burn a CD. The computer that does this does not have to be the same as the one that you are installing the Command-Line based OS on.

  1. A printer or second PC

An nice extra step is to print out the relevant documentation or keep it on a second PC so you can refer to things as you go along.

About

Hello, my name is Zeth, I'll be your host here.

Command Line Warriors is about taking control of your own technology, it looks at our experiences of computing; especially using GNU/Linux, the Python programming language, the command-line and issues such as techno-ethics, best practices and whatever is cool now. If you take control of your technology then you are a Warrior too!

This site is your site too which means that you can contribute and get involved. You can leave comments using the facility provided. For me, the comments and discussions are by far the best part of the site. So please do have your say!
