From Windows-Wimp to Command-Line Warrior. Part 3: Research now will save time later.

You need to find out as much about your hardware as possible. Get together any handbooks or boxes that came with your computer. Make a note of any interesting information that the Windows Control panel will tell you.

If you really can't find the information then don't worry - the install CD will probably be able to detect it.

At the very minimum, you want to know:

What your processor is - e.g. Pentium I, II, III, IV. AMD K7, XP, AMD64 etc
What kind of graphics card or chip you have: E.g. Nvidia, ATI, SiS etc
What the name of the sound-card or chip is.
What the size of your hard-drive is (In Windows, 'My Computer' will tell you this).

On Windows XP, the 'System Information' tool will tell you most things, this is under Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Information.
