2008 Predictions - in brief

So, in the last post I scored my predictions for 2007, I got four correct, and two wrong. Not bad, but this year I plan on going even more crazy. It is more fun if we punt and fail than if we say something almost certain and then find out a year later that it is really certain.

Each prediction has commentary, but the article got really long. So I am going to cut it up into several parts.

So without further ado, here are my ten most radical predictions for 2008:

  1. ODF becomes the default file format for Europe.
  2. The OpenMoko project will finally release their phone.
  3. GPLv3 will become more widely adopted than GPLv2 for new projects.
  4. A US/global recession may affect the corporate uptake of the Linux Desktop (but perhaps not in the way most people expect).
  5. Microsoft will announce a new Operating System.
  6. 2008 will be the year of Independent and unencumbered Music.
  7. A single Linux distro, probably Ubuntu, will have more users than Apple OS X.
  8. By the end of the year, more pre-installed Linux desktops will be sold than Macs.
  9. Social networking will become a protocol.
  10. The US presidential election will be won by the most boring candidate, probably Mitt Romney.

So far I agree with most of your predictions, although I do have a couple comments:

-#2, I believe the OpenMoko will finally be released (I have been looking forward to it for some time now), but I think it will be overshadowed greatly by Google's Android platform.

-#7, Macs sales are on such an upswing, that I doubt that pre-installed Linux desktops and laptops will out-sell them. I have no doubt that Linux users will outnumber Mac users in the near future, but I don't see Linux machines outselling Apple hardware.

As a whole, great predictions, and I can't wait to see the results 2K8 will have on the information world.

#7 I found something incredible the other day, no one can deny that everyone, at least here in sweden, are running cracked versions of windows. I noticed looking for used hardware on a huge classified service, that all the ads that were selling used computers came with ubuntu installed. The reason is simple, it's illegal to sell cracked software, and it is actually enforced, unlike filesharing. So what everyone does, is install their favorite linux distro when selling off their old hardware. Which leads to a 2:nd hand market flooded with GNU/Linux.

/The future looks bright :)

what about Galeon? in Gnome i use Galeon mostly. it is fast and stable and has a nice portal with search masks for Debian, FSF, Freshmeat and so on. wtf ...
