Burning an iso to CD on Windows

This post explains how to burn an .iso file to CD on Windows XP using the command line. For example, you might want to create a Linux install CD.

Firstly you need to download the "Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools" from Microsoft. Despite the name, it does support Windows XP.

Download the .exe and it will install using the normal Windows-style installer.

After that you have a command called cdburn and one called dvdburn.

Simply

cdburn .. Destination .. Path to .iso file.

So if the .iso file is in the current directory and if your cd-drive is E: then something like this should do the trick:

cdburn E: linux-distro-2006.iso

The default speed seems a bit slow. You may want to speed things up a bit:

cdburn E: linux-distro-2006.iso -speed max

For other options you can type "cdburn" without any arguments to get a little man page.

Stumbled across your blog today, looks interesting. Nice info on the command line approach to .iso burning -- hadn't seen that before and I've been doing more of that lately.

Did a little quick searching of your site and found no mention of Take Command or 4NT, some alternative Windows command line shells from JP Software (www.jpsoft.com). I suspect you might find them of interest -- they're very powerful.
