Pylons part 1 - Getting easy_install

Pylons Versions

Pylons is under active development, currently building up to it's 1.0 release, expected in 2008. Consequently, there were some very big changes between 0.9.5 and 0.9.6; not least for the fact that the templating engine and database abstraction library were completely swapped out. So you want to be learning with version 0.9.6 or above.

You have two choices for getting Pylons, firstly through your distributions' package manager (if you are on Linux) or through easy_install.

Gentoo stable and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn both currently have older versions of Pylons than 0.9.6, so that leaves us with easy_install too.

(Mis)management with (not so) easy_install

easy_install is "a Python module bundled with setuptools that lets you automatically download, build, install, and manage Python packages."

If you are on Mac or Windows, easy_install might seem like the best thing since sliced bread. However, compared to a modern Linux package manager such as apt or portage, easy_install is rather under-whelming.

easy_install cannot remove packages it has installed, it does not clean up old versions or the mess it makes.

On Gentoo you want the package called: dev-python/setuptools

On Ubuntu/Debian you want: python-setuptools

Another way to get setuptools is by downloading this script, and running:

python ez_setup.py setuptools

This is an especially good way to go if it later moans that your distro's version of setuptools is too old.
